New Zealand

February 10, 2015

For seven days in December 2014 my sister and I travelled Queenstown, New Zealand. New Zealand is such a beautiful and scenic country. We were lucky to have a week of sunshine from long weeks of rain.

We stayed at the Adventure Queenstown Hostel, which was the coziest, cleanest, friendliest, and most helpful hostel I have ever stayed at. I would highly recommend it. The staff happily booked all our tours and even got us two spots on a tour when there was only one spot left.

Being from Alaska we love hiking and knew there were some wonderful places to hike in Queenstown. We started with a hike up to the Gondola, then continued on to the Ben Lomond trail, which was a pretty demanding trail but the amazing views were worth it. The trail is pretty steep so a lot of water and a couple breaks were definitely needed! I have never sweated so much on a cloudy day in my life! The hike is estimated to be 8 hours return but we completed it in 5 hours. We even saw a large family of goats on the way back.

The Queensland Hill walk trail was also fun, the walk up to the trailhead through all the streets was steep and the walking trail is definitely more of a hike rather than a “walk” in some parts but the views of Queensland was well worth it.

We booked our Day trip to Milford Sound with Kiwi Discovery, which was fun but if I were to do it again I would do a 2 day trip and spend the night in Te Anau so the whole day was not spent on the bus.

The bus trip to Milford Sound was 8 hours return from Queenstown with only a 2 hour boat ride. There were some nice photo opportunities on the way that helped break the trip up. Personally I expected more from Milford Sound in regards to scenery but it was such a gorgeous sunny day it made the trip worth it.

Sky diving with Skydive Paradise was such an amazing experience that I will never forget. The package with videos and photos was a good price also. The feeling of freefalling is unexplainable and I highly suggest to anyone who is thinking about skydiving to just do it!

It was the best feeling I have ever experienced in my entire life. I’m happy that I chose to do 15,000 ft it was worth the extra money! The views going up in the plane were breathtaking, I have never seen water so perfectly turquoise and clear in my life. The location was perfect also, with Mt Cook in the background and surrounded by mountains. I would of went twice in row if I could!

Fergburger was a popular burger restaurant that has a lot of hype so we decided to try them for ourselves. Luckily we came during the right time and only had to wait 15 minutes, usually the line is ridiculously long. The menu has a good selection of unique burgers. The burgers were delicious but personally nothing can compare to my favorite burger joint, Grill’d.

One of our last nights in town we decided to try Kiwi Crawl (pub crawl), we ended up going on a really quiet Thursday night, there was about 15 of us so it was a nice intimate outing with games, pizza and free drinks at every stop.

The Ice Bar was such a fun unique experience, I really enjoyed all the ice sculptures and how everything was made with ice, the bar, chairs, glasses, tables, everything!!!

Whenever we just wanted to chill and relax there were always great street performers to listen to in the park while everyone sat on the grass,

I would love to go back and give my self a couple months to explore all of New Zealand. Queenstown reminded me so much of my home town with the mountains and climate. The big thing that was different with the scenery was the lack of trees and snow caps on the mountains. I loved the energy and vibe that the town had I have never felt so at home while travelling.
