What Makes a Brand Look Professional - Ep. 69

This article is adapted from an episode of Intentional Branding where I talk through this topic in more detail.
A high-end brand isn't necessarily the brand with the biggest budget. It isn't about having an expensive logo, using luxury colors, or investing in a completely custom website.
A brand feels high-end when every decision feels intentional.
From your creative direction and photography to the way you communicate with clients and the tiny design details most people overlook, there are plenty of ways to elevate your brand identity without spending a fortune.
Here are four things you can focus on to make your brand feel more premium, even if you're just getting started.
What Makes a Brand Look Professional
1. Create a Clear Creative Direction
The first thing that makes a brand feel high-end is having a clear creative direction that doesn't look like everyone else's.
Premium brands aren't chasing every trend. Their visual decisions support one overall feeling, or what I like to call the brand vibe.
That clarity creates confidence, and that confidence builds trust with your future clients or customers.
You want to develop a recognizable style and personality so your brand doesn't feel generic or look like every other business using the same Canva templates.
One of my favorite ways to create that creative direction is with a mood board.
Start by gathering all of the images that represent how you want people to perceive your brand. Then look for the themes that show up over and over again.
Your mood board can help you identify:
Your brand colors
Visual themes
Brand assets
Photography styles
Overall creative energy
Your visual personality
I use mood boards to create a clear creative direction for my branding clients, and they're also a big part of how I approach logo design.
When you know what your brand should feel like, every visual decision becomes easier.
If your brand doesn't have a clear creative direction yet, that's something I walk through inside my DIY Your Brand in Five Days course. It's designed to help you build that foundation so your brand feels intentional, cohesive, and truly reflects your business.
2. Invest in Professional Brand Photography
BUT if you don't have the budget it's completely normal to start with stock photography.
Free stock photos can be a great starting point, especially when you're working with a limited budget. But as your business grows, professional photography is one of the best investments you can make to elevate your brand.
Professional photos instantly communicate quality.
They also help justify higher prices because people can see the level of professionalism before they even read a single word of your copy.
If you're an artist, for example, imagine someone scrolling through Instagram and seeing a professional photo of you holding your canvas. Your face is visible, you're smiling, and the entire vibe of the photo matches your brand.
Compare that to a generic template where someone else is holding a canvas and you simply place your artwork over it. Not as impressive right?
The second option can feel generic because people can tell when something looks like a template.
If you don't have the budget for a brand photographer, get creative.
You can trade services with other creatives in your industry or locally. I've traded logo design for family portraits, and I've also traded graphic design services with a photographer.
You can even approach a local clothing boutique, borrow pieces for your brand shoot, and offer them some of the professional photos to use on their website which is also what I have done in the past.
There are a lot of possibilities when you have a limited budget. Don't be shy about collaborating with other creatives.
I also want you to remember, photography and graphic design work together.
If you don't have a good photo, it's difficult to create good design around it.
Photography is often the first visual hook, so having strong images gives your entire brand a better starting point.
Make Your Brand Photos Work With Your Brand
When you're planning your professional photos, think about the colors in your environment.
If your brand has a specific color palette, look for clothing and backgrounds that complement it.
For example, my brand uses a lot of blue and neutral colors, so I'm not going to take photos where the background has highly saturated reds, purples, or bright greens.
Those colors might be beautiful on their own, but they could clash with the rest of my brand when I use the photos on my website or social media.
Think about where you're going to use your photos and make sure they work with the visual identity you've already created.
Those little details make a difference.
3. Create a Client Experience That Feels Thoughtful
A strong brand isn't just about how things look.
It's also about how people experience your business.
Premium brands communicate clearly and set expectations from the very beginning.
When someone inquires through your company website, you can create a simple automated email or thank-you page letting them know what happens next.
For example, you might say:
"Thanks for reaching out. I'll get back to you within 48 hours."
That small message does a lot.
It tells the potential client that you've received their inquiry and gives them a clear expectation for when they'll hear from you.
Clear communication builds trust.
It makes clients feel like they're being taken care of, and that's what creates a premium experience.
You don't necessarily need an expensive-looking website or elaborate client portal.
You need to communicate well.
A thoughtful client experience can make your business feel more professional without requiring a huge investment.
4. Pay Attention to the Details Most People Ignore
The fastest way to make a brand feel more polished is often to pay attention to the small details.
One of the biggest ones is typography hierarchy.
Your headers should be the largest.
Subheads come in second.
Paragraphs should the smallest size on the page and those font sizes should stay consistent throughout your brand.
This is especially important on your website.
Set up your website's text styles so you have consistent heading and paragraph sizes instead of manually adjusting every piece of text.
For example, on Wix, you can create heading styles and paragraph styles so that the same hierarchy is used throughout your website.
That consistency makes everything feel more intentional.
Give Your Design Room to Breathe
White space is another simple way to make your brand look more elevated.
Not everything needs to be touching.
Give your design elements room around the edges of your website, social media graphics, and marketing materials.
Use proper margins and spacing so your content has room to breathe.
This is honestly one of the biggest and fastest things you can do to make your brand look more polished.
When text is running into the edge of a design or getting covered by an Instagram caption, the experience doesn't feel as professional.
Think about where your content will actually be displayed.
Keep your text and artwork within safe margins so everything is easy to read and nothing important gets cut off or covered.
Good design isn't just about making something look nice. It's about making it easy for people to experience and understand.
